Both non-objective reductive form and a hybrid between painting and three dimensions has been a constant throughout Feinberg's years of work. Relationships between shape, colour and texture present themselves directly in work that is wall oriented and focused on the specific characteristics of the materials I use - wood and oil paint, and foregrounding those. The wood support with its inherent patterns, textures, color, or history are an integral presence. In contrast the paint application, whether color or monochromatic, is uninflected and matte, drawing attention to its density and allowing a deep light saturation. The painted areas are not collage, though they often appear that way. Chance and first impulses are often a part of the compositional process and those choices do not feel arbitrary, but rather striking, mysterious, and honest. What Shadows We Are, What Shadows We Pursue. This work was a radical departure in its use of only black and white paint. In my previous work all color had never been achieved through the admixture of black, so black was never used. There is also a more obvious use of the wood support here, sometimes gessoed and sometimes left ungessoed. The title of the group was found in another context, but felt appropriate to the group.
